My Framework for Thinking about Goals

Hey Friends,

Since I read this book I’ve been thinking a lot about systems vs goals mindset. You may be wondering what I am on about well in the words of James Clear

The purpose of setting goals is to win the game. The purpose of building systems is to continue playing the game. True long-term thinking is goal-less thinking. It’s not about any single accomplishment. It is about the cycle of endless refinement and continuous improvement. Ultimately, it is your commitment to the process that will determine your progress.
Goals are about the results you want to achieve. Systems are about the processes that lead to those results.

Normally I am with him in that I am in the camp of systems e.g instead of I want to run a marathon I will go for a run 3 times a weekNow this works because by running 3 times a week come time for the marathon you will be able to run it. But you are still left with the questions What are goals for then? Do we need goals? I personally think that yes goals are important but as a standalone thing. Goals I think are the steering wheel, a guidance for what you should be aiming for.

That’s all,

Have a great week!

Conor

My Favourite Things This Week

  1. Time off - This week we got Monday and Tuesday off school which was great and then Wednesday and Thursday I was sick so that was fun.
  2. Exams - It seems weird but one of my favourite times of year is exam season and it is now in swing.

Quote of The Week

We try and make every good experience repeatable, and then run away from the resulting boredom.
